Are Public Toilets Open on Christmas Day? UK Opening Hours for the Holidays
By Daniel Wyd5 min readGuides & Advice
The short answer: on Christmas Day most council-run public toilets close, there are no National Rail trains, and large shops — supermarkets included — are legally required to stay shut. The most dependable open toilets are at motorway services, which in England must stay open around the clock with free toilets, and in pubs that open for Christmas lunch.
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday, so expect two days of reduced provision, followed by a substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December. This guide sets out what is usually open on each day and how to plan around the gaps.
What Is Usually Closed on Christmas Day
- Council public toilets. Most councils close some or all of their toilets on Christmas Day so cleaning staff get the day off. Recent festive notices from councils including Weymouth, Looe, North Petherton and Ampthill all show their toilets closed on Christmas Day. A few keep selected sites open for limited hours — Minehead kept two open from 10:00 to 16:00 on Christmas Day 2025 — so check your own council's notice.
- Supermarkets and large shops. The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 bars shops with a sales area over 280m² in England and Wales from opening on Christmas Day, whatever day of the week it falls. Scotland has the same rule under the Christmas Day and New Year's Day Trading (Scotland) Act 2007. That rules out supermarket toilets for the day.
- Railway stations. No National Rail services run on Christmas Day, and big stations close — London Waterloo, for example, routinely shuts on 25 and 26 December. Do not count on station toilets.
What Is Usually Open on Christmas Day
- Motorway services. Department for Transport policy for England (Circular 01/2022) requires motorway service areas to be available 24 hours a day throughout the year, with free toilets usable without a purchase and at least one Changing Places toilet. If you are driving on Christmas Day, these are your most reliable stop.
- Pubs serving Christmas lunch. Many pubs open for part of the day, and the toilets are there for customers. Wetherspoon, for instance, opened its pubs from 11am to 3pm on Christmas Day 2024, most of them serving drinks only. Expect to buy something.
- Small shops. Shops of 280m² or less are not covered by the Christmas Day ban, so some convenience stores open. A small shop is unlikely to have a customer toilet to offer, though.
- Fast food. McDonald's restaurants are run largely by franchisees who set their own festive hours. Local listings in recent years have shown most branches closed on Christmas Day and a few open for a short window, so check the app before relying on one.
The Christmas Day ban also exempts some larger premises, including pharmacies, petrol stations and shops in transport terminals. Exempt does not mean open, but it explains why you may find the odd large forecourt shop trading.
Boxing Day
No law stops large shops opening on Boxing Day, so many supermarkets and shopping centres reopen, often with shorter hours — and with them, their customer toilets. Some chains choose to stay closed for staff, so check before you set off.
Council toilets are mixed. Some reopen with reduced hours — Minehead opened its toilets from 10:00 to 16:00 on Boxing Day 2025 — while others, such as Tenterden and North Petherton, stay closed. Trains are very limited, with only a small number of operators running any service.
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day
Large shops can open on New Year's Day in England and Wales, and many do with reduced hours. Council toilets again vary: Ampthill and North Petherton close theirs on New Year's Day, while Minehead opened its toilets from 10:00 to 16:00 on 1 January 2026. If you are heading to a New Year's Eve event, look for the temporary toilets the organisers provide rather than relying on permanent blocks nearby, which may close early.
Practical Fallbacks
- Look up your council's festive notice in the week before Christmas. Most publish one on their website or social media.
- Check 24-hour toilets in advance. Our 24-hour pages for London, Birmingham and Manchester list toilets recorded with round-the-clock opening. Bank holiday closures can override normal hours, so treat them as a shortlist to confirm, not a guarantee.
- On a long drive, plan stops at motorway services rather than town centres.
- Carry a toilet card if you have an urgent condition — it makes asking at a pub or restaurant much easier.
- In a hurry, our emergency toilet finder shows the nearest listed options to where you are standing.
Christmas Markets
Most of the big city Christmas markets finish before Christmas Day — Birmingham's Frankfurt market ran until 24 December in 2025 — so the busiest toilet weeks are the ones leading up to it. Our Christmas market toilets pages list the nearest public toilets to each major UK market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are public toilets open on Christmas Day?
Mostly not. Many councils close all their toilets on Christmas Day, and others keep only a few sites open for limited hours. Motorway services and pubs serving Christmas lunch are the most reliable alternatives.
Are motorway services open on Christmas Day?
Yes. Government policy for England requires motorway service areas to be open 24 hours a day throughout the year, with free toilets you can use without buying anything. Some shops and restaurants inside may close or shorten their hours, but the toilets remain available.
Can I use a supermarket toilet on Boxing Day?
Often, yes. Large shops are only legally barred from opening on Christmas Day, so many supermarkets reopen on Boxing Day with reduced hours. Not every chain opens, and not every store has customer toilets, so check the store's hours first.
Are station toilets open over Christmas?
Not on Christmas Day, when no National Rail trains run and major stations close. On Boxing Day only a handful of operators run trains, so many stations stay shut. Services resume from 27 December, but engineering work often closes some stations for longer — London Liverpool Street shut from Christmas Eve to 2 January over 2025–26 — so check National Rail Enquiries before you travel.
