This page explains how the listings and guides on ToiletNearMe are made, so you know where the information comes from and how to fix it when it is wrong.
How listings are built
Our listings start from the toiletmap.org.uk dataset, used under CC BY 4.0. We sync it periodically rather than reading it live, so listings reflect the dataset as of the last sync. We de-duplicate entries that describe the same toilet, and where a listing has coordinates but no postcode we backfill one using postcodes.io (ONS/OS data, Open Government Licence v3). The listing counts on this site were last recomputed on .
How the counts are computed
The counts on our hub and area pages (for example the number of accessible or 24-hour toilets in a place) are worked out from the synced dataset, not typed in by hand. When the data changes at the next sync, the counts change with it.
Why some listings have no opening hours
Opening hours are an optional field in the upstream dataset, so roughly half of all listings arrive without them. When a listing has no hours, we show “not listed” rather than guessing. We would rather tell you we do not know than print hours that might send you to a locked door.
Corrections
Every listing has a way to report a problem, and you can vote on whether a listing is accurate. When you report a correction it comes to us; we check it against the data and update the listing where we can. Because listings are rebuilt from the dataset at each sync, some fixes are best made upstream at toiletmap.org.uk, and we will point you there when that is the case. You can also reach us through the contact form.
No unreviewed or auto-generated content
We do not publish bulk auto-generated articles. Listing facts and the counts on hub pages are computed from the dataset; every guide and every page of written copy is checked and edited by a person before it goes live, and we take responsibility for what it says.
No paid placement
We do not sell placement in listings or search results. Rankings are based on the data and how useful a result is, not on payment.
Who writes the guides
The guides are written and edited by Daniel Wyd, founder and editor of ToiletNearMe. You can read more about the site.
