Who we are

ToiletNearMe is a free, independent website that helps people find public toilets across the UK. It is run by an individual, not a company. In this policy “we” means the site and the person who runs it, who is the data controller for the information described here.

If you have any question about your data or this policy, please reach us through our contact form and we’ll help.

What we collect

  • Server logs. Our host records standard request data such as your IP address, the pages you request, and your browser type. This is normal web-server logging.
  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are used and how people move through the site.
  • Advertising cookies. We show ads through Google AdSense, which may set cookies to personalise ads. A consent banner to manage this is being added alongside the ad network.
  • Contact form. When you message us we receive what you send: your message and any name or email you include. The form is protected by hCaptcha.
  • Reports and votes. If you report a correction or vote on a listing, we store what you submit so we can act on it. These forms are protected by hCaptcha.
  • Location. The “nearest toilets” feature uses your browser’s geolocation only if you allow it. Your coordinates are sent to a database function to find toilets near you and are not stored.

Why we use it, and our lawful basis

We use this data to run the site, keep it working and secure, understand how it is used, act on your reports and reply to your messages, and to show ads that help fund it. In plain terms: server logs and basic security rest on our legitimate interest in running a working, safe website; analytics and advertising cookies will be controlled by the consent banner we are adding with the ad network; replying to a message or acting on a report you send us is us doing the thing you asked for.

Who processes your data

  • Vercel — hosting and server logs.
  • Supabase — our database, where reports and votes are stored.
  • Google — Analytics and AdSense.
  • hCaptcha — anti-spam checks on the contact, report and vote forms.
  • Resend — delivering the email from the contact form to us.

Each of these handles data under its own terms and privacy notice.

Cookies

The site uses a few kinds of cookies and similar storage:

  • Essential — needed for the site and its forms to work.
  • Analytics — Google Analytics, to measure usage.
  • Advertising — Google AdSense, which may personalise ads.

A consent banner to accept or reject analytics and advertising cookies is being added with the ad network.

How long we keep it

We keep contact messages for as long as we need them to reply and follow up. We keep a report about a listing for as long as that listing exists, so we can check and act on it. Server logs and analytics are kept for the limited periods our host and Google apply.

Your rights

You’re in control of your data. You can ask for a copy of what we hold, have it corrected or deleted, or tell us to stop using it — just get in touch through our contact form and we’ll sort it out.

We’d always rather hear from you first so we can put things right. If you’re in the UK and you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your data, you also have the right to raise it with the Information Commissioner’s Office (the UK’s data protection regulator), or your local equivalent if you’re elsewhere.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page.
