IBS and Toilet Access in the UK — Cards, RADAR Keys & Your Rights

By The ToiletNearMe TeamMarch 26, 20264 min read

Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects up to 1 in 5 adults in the UK — as many as 13 million people. IBS urgency means the need for a toilet can go from zero to critical in seconds, making access to reliable public toilets a daily medical necessity rather than a convenience. This guide covers every tool, card, scheme, and legal right available in the UK to help you access toilets quickly and confidently.

Use our IBS toilet finder to locate the nearest suitable facilities near you, or search by your current location.

The Just Can't Wait Card

The Just Can't Wait card (issued by Bladder & Bowel UK and the Bladder & Bowel Community) is a free card — available in physical form or added to Apple/Google Wallet — that you can show to staff in shops, restaurants, and venues to explain that you have an urgent medical need for toilet access. Participating businesses display a window sticker. It is not legally enforceable, but it is widely recognised and provides a dignified, low-confrontation way to request urgent access.

The Can't Wait Card (Guts UK)

Following the closure of the IBS Network in June 2025 (which had operated since 1991), its resources — including the Can't Wait card — transitioned to Guts UK (gutscharity.org.uk). The card is credit-card sized and can be shown in shops, restaurants, and public venues. A particularly useful feature is the international travel version, translated into 12 languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish — making it useful for holidays abroad.

Guts UK also issues a "This Can't Wait" card. Both are available to members.

RADAR Key (National Key Scheme)

A RADAR key unlocks over 9,000 locked disabled toilets across the UK — in shopping centres, railway and bus stations, pubs, cafés, department stores, and motorway services. IBS qualifies as a condition for which you can obtain a RADAR key. Keys cost £5 from Disability Rights UK (disabilityrightsuk.org) — the official source.

A RADAR key gives you private, immediate access to a clean, enclosed cubicle with a sink — by far the most practical tool for managing urgent IBS needs away from home. Keep one on your keyring.

Your Legal Rights Under the Equality Act 2010

There is no universal legal right for a member of the public to use a business's toilet. However:

  • If a business refuses toilet access in a way that disadvantages you due to a medical condition, this may constitute unlawful discrimination under the Equality Act 2010
  • IBS can qualify as a disability under the Equality Act if it has a "substantial and long-term adverse effect" on normal day-to-day activities — which chronic, severe IBS clearly does for many people
  • Businesses have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people (Section 20 of the Equality Act)
  • The Just Can't Wait card helps you invoke these rights politely and without confrontation

Practical Tips for Managing IBS Away From Home

  1. Plan your route around known toilet locations — use our toilet finder or the Great British Public Toilet Map before you leave
  2. Carry a RADAR key — it gives private access to 9,000+ locked disabled toilets
  3. Use the Just Can't Wait card app on your phone — faster than a physical card to show
  4. Identify Community Toilet Scheme venues — participating businesses allow access without purchase
  5. Know which chains are reliable — Wetherspoons, McDonald's, and Pret a Manger generally allow access; large supermarkets are usually reliable
  6. Use the Open Now filter on our map to see facilities currently open near you

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IBS a disability under UK law?

IBS can qualify as a disability under the Equality Act 2010 if it has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on normal day-to-day activities. This means businesses have a duty to make reasonable adjustments, which can include providing toilet access. The Just Can't Wait card helps you invoke this right without confrontation.

Can I get a RADAR key for IBS?

Yes. IBS qualifies as a medical condition for which a RADAR key can be obtained. Keys cost £5 from Disability Rights UK (disabilityrightsuk.org) and unlock over 9,000 disabled toilets across the UK.

What happened to the IBS Network?

The IBS Network, which had operated since 1991, closed in June 2025 due to financial pressures. Its resources, including the Can't Wait card, have transitioned to Guts UK (gutscharity.org.uk), which is now the primary UK charity covering IBS support.
